Faith and Religion
Priesthood in Hinduism has been exclusively male for a long time through textual prescription, purity norms, and hereditary gatekeeping, but that has been transformed by recent entry of women into the field. This study investigates the emergence of women priests in Kolkata, West Bengal: a city whose reformist history and Shakta traditions make it a significant site for examining the renegotiation of gendered religious authority
