This study aims to explore the possibility of a ‘hype’ by the media while mainly highlighting the everyday usage of Sanskrit in various situations in Mattur. The project also addresses various gaps in the existing literature, such as the sociolinguistic situation at Mattur, the status of women and minorities and their extent of knowledge in Sanskrit, the contribution of Samskrita Bharati, organization that aims to preserving Sanskrit, the government policies and their contribution towards the language -if any, as well as the role of the Sankethi community in Mattur.
